‍We know living in a property where everything works as it should is important. But the reality is that day to day living in any property means there will always be times where things don’t work as well as they did before, or when they break.

The best approach is to learn what you can do to get the issues addressed as soon as possible. When you know this, you can be in control and make sure you can get back to being as comfortable as possible in your home.  

There are a few items in most properties that can be problematic, deteriorate or need addressing over time due to day-to-day wear and tear. Our guide will show you how to take control and eliminate maintenance issues as soon as possible.

Oven

Clean the oven once every 6 months

The oven won’t heat up.

If your oven has a clock, set the clock.

If your oven has a timer, make sure you set the timer

Check that the power is turned on.

Exhaust fans

Clean the filters twice a year

Laundry exhaust fan doesn't appear to be working.

Hold a piece of A4 paper flat to the fan and if it holds it means the fan is working.

With the fan turned on, check that the steam is not building up. That’s a sign its working.

Check that you can hear the fan in either the laundry or bathroom.

Typically the bathroom and laundry exhaust fans are connected.

Clothes dryer

Empty the lint filter after every use

The dryer isn't starting

Check if the cord has been plugged in and powerpoint is on.

If it's brand new, check that the plastic covers on all the bits and pieces have been removed.

Check that the lint filter is not full.

Smoke alarm

Change smoke alarm battery every 12 months (always good to do this when daylight savings starts or ends)

The smoke alarm is beeping.

If you can see any plastic on the smoke alarm, remove it.

Remove the cover of the alarm and change the battery.

You can change the battery yourself.

Rangehood

Clean the rangehood every 6 months

The rangehood isn’t turning on.

Check if the cord has been plugged in and switched on at the powerpoint.

Check the power has been switched on the range hood.

Check if any other lights have stopped working - if all lights are off, check your fuse box
